Statistical Communiqué on China’s 2025 National Economic and Social Development

The National Bureau of Statistics’ annual communiqué brings economic production, household conditions, public services and environmental indicators into one account of China’s development during 2025. Its twelve sections provide a broad statistical counterpart to more specialised policy documents.

Production and the national economy

The general outlook is followed by agriculture, industry and construction, services, domestic trade, investment, foreign economic relations and finance. Preliminary GDP is reported at 140,187.9 billion yuan, with annual real growth of 5.0 percent. The notes distinguish current-price levels from constant-price growth rates. This separation matters because a monetary total and a measure of output growth describe different aspects of the economy.

Household income and social protection

The household section reports mean and median disposable income, urban and rural household measures, consumption and social-security participation. It also includes social assistance. These series bring distribution and protection into the annual account, but their populations and definitions vary. Mean income, median income and insurance participation cannot be combined as if they measured one common condition.

Services, education and scientific capacity

Dedicated sections cover science, education, culture, health and sport. Research spending appears alongside education enrolment, public cultural facilities and medical resources. This structure connects productive development with public provision and human capabilities. It also makes the communiqué useful for tracing relationships between policy fields without reducing social development to a GDP total.

Resources, environment and statistical responsibility

The final section addresses resources, energy use, environmental quality and emergency management. An extensive source inventory identifies the ministries and agencies providing administrative data. The communiqué is consequently a coordinated statistical publication drawing on different systems of observation, rather than a single survey with one population and method.

Release: 28 February 2026, reporting 2025. All figures are labelled preliminary, with Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan excluded. The later science-and-technology expenditure communiqué provides revised specialised R&D figures. The release, unit, coverage and price basis identify the measure used in a comparison.
