Governance and Accountability

The League’s governance connects collective decisions, the conduct of organisational affairs and external representation. The general meeting is the supreme governing body; the committee conducts the organisation’s affairs within the framework of its rules and decisions.

Public communication, international correspondence and editorial work are carried out within that framework. The contact addresses on this website identify the function responsible for an enquiry.

The general meeting

The general meeting adopts and amends the organisation’s rules, elects the committee and considers the reports and accounts placed before it. It takes the decisions reserved to the membership under the rules.

This provides the constitutional link between membership and the conduct of organisational affairs. Matters concerning the rules, elections, reports or the interpretation of a governing decision belong to the organisational channel rather than to the editorial treatment of a particular article.

General questions concerning these arrangements can be sent through Contact. The organisation’s official identity and headquarters details are listed in Public Information.

Committee and representation

The committee conducts the League’s affairs within the authority provided by its rules and the decisions of the general meeting. Its work includes the coordination of organisational responsibilities and public communication.

The presidency carries the external representative authority specified by the rules. Secretarial responsibility concerns the administration and record of organisational affairs. A public contact address serves a particular correspondence function; an undertaking or agreement requires the appropriate representative authority.

Function Responsibility
General meeting Governing rules, elections, reports and reserved decisions
Committee Conduct and coordination of organisational affairs
Presidency Representation within the authority provided by the rules
Secretarial responsibility Administration, records and organisational correspondence
Editorial responsibility Preparation, sourcing and correction of public material

Organisational texts

The Statements collection contains the League’s principal public texts on its European remit and its theoretical orientation towards China. Each can be read in full and followed into the relevant subject dossiers.

A statement expresses the organisation’s position. A briefing develops an explanatory argument, while a source record introduces a work issued by another author or institution. These forms of publication have distinct purposes and are labelled accordingly throughout the collection.

The Principles provide the wider political framework. Our Work describes how the subject collections and publications are arranged.

Responsibility for publications

The League is responsible for the original material it publishes. The editorial function checks attribution, sources, terminology and the presentation of figures. Original external documents retain their own authors and institutional status.

Material factual and attribution errors are handled through the corrections process. A request identifies the page, passage and supporting source; editorial review establishes the necessary change and the appropriate public explanation. The Editorial Policy describes that process alongside the rules for quotations, translations and revisions.
